GM boss Mary Barra has said on multiple occasions that the company is intent on creating electric vehicles in a wide variety of segments, not just six-figure hyper trucks and electrified Corvettes. According to talking heads at Automotive News, one product under consideration is an all-electric pickup truck slotting under the Colorado.
This type of product could make an abundance of sense on several fronts since it would provide the brand something with which to entice buyers of the Ford Maverick while also fleshing out their portfolio of EVs in the $30,000 bracket. Remember, GM wants to have numerous affordable all-electric vehicles – and a right-sized pickup could be a great supporting act to the forthcoming Equinox EV which will also play in this price range.
AN says such a machine is part of an ongoing effort to solicit customer feedback as it relates to these affordable EVs. Discovering what works for Joe Q. Public is a large part of product development with these $30,000-ish EVs, apparently, though we will point out that sometimes customers don’t know what they want until it is placed before them. As someone in the car industry a century ago allegedly said: “If I asked people what they wanted, they would have asked for faster horses.” Point taken.

Nevertheless, concepts like this small EV pickup (of which there is no production timeline or even photos) are part and parcel of the Brave New World of electric vehicles. Provided with a blank slate in the form of its Ultium architecture, GM engineers can imagine products heretofore deemed either too expensive or too impractical to pursue. It is suggested this electric mini truck could even be a two-door model with a low roofline and 4- or 4.5-foot bed. Given many pickup customers just haul sailboat fuel all day, that’ll be more than enough for most.
And if the feedback GM garners suggests this concept is appealing but a touch too small, the modular nature of the Ultium platform could permit them to build a Maverick-like four-door instead. The Silverado EV shown atop this post demonstrates the freedom designers enjoy when unshackled from the surly bonds of internal combustion; such inventiveness could very well lead to a small two-door electric pickup truck as well.
