LONDON: Rolls-Royce talks with award-winning National Geographic photographer and explorer Cory Richards, in the latest of a series of ‘Inspiring Greatness’ films created by the marque.
The series of films created by Rolls-Royce have previous episodes that include Moving Image Artist Refik Anadol, Ndebele (South Africa) Artist Dr Esther Mahlangu and Portrait and Fashion Photographer Rankin.
One of the episodes is about Richards’ exploits and his personal insights on risk-taking as he strives for perfection in his work – much like the British coachbuilder’s philosophy as it hand-builds each vehicle at its Global Centre of Luxury Manufacturing Excellence at Goodwood in the UK.
“Everything I do is driven by risk-taking. If we don’t take risks, we don’t fail, and when we don’t fail, we don’t learn. Rolls-Royce, to me, occupies a space that I resonate with in terms of perfection, where there is an absolute attention to detail that is unrivalled,” said Richards.
The film documents his life starting from his challenging childhood right up to summiting Mt. Everest without the use of supplemental oxygen.
Richards’ photography has taken him across the world – from the unclimbed peaks of Antarctica and the Himalayas of Nepal to the forgotten war zones of Angola, Uganda, and Pakistan.
In 2011, he climbed Pakistan’s Gasherbrum II, making him the only American, and one of only a few people, to climb the 8km peak in the dead of winter where he managed to survive an avalanche during his descent and taking a picture of himself just moments after his recovery.
In 2018, Richards also took part in ‘The Final Challenge’ which saw him journey to some of the most remote parts of Scotland, the United Arab Emirates and the US in a camouflaged Rolls-Royce Cullinan sports utility vehicle (SUV) – testing it to the point of destruction and showing it abilities on all types of terrain.
The photographer managed to document the challenges the Cullinan faced ahead of its world debut in May 2018.
