French automaker Renault has given a sneak peak into the prototype production process being undertaken at a “unique and high-tech” miniature plant which is building the first all-electric Renault 5 hatchback.
Part of Renault’s larger Technocentre engineering complex near Paris, the Global Production Engineering Center is a “unique, secret, and high-tech miniature plant” and is home to where all future Renault production models are first built as prototypes.
Currently, the facility is building the Renault 5, a battery electric hatchback which the company originally previewed back in 2021.
Production at the facility provides the company with a preview of the large-scale manufacturing process and allows them to produce prototypes that “accurately represent future production models to validate the industrial assembly process”.
The so-called “mules” have been in production since October 2021 and, featuring a Clio-like silhouette, have been tested in Lapland as part of the longer term development and testing process for the company’s electric CMF-B EV platform.
Currently, Renault says that they are producing the “vehicle check” prototypes which are true to the design of the future production version. These camouflaged prototypes have already been out on European roads – as confirmed by recent spy shots.
