STUTTGART: After having kept their designs well hidden and under lock and key, Porsche has finally allowed them to see the light of day.
The German sportscar maker has decided to go ahead and published 15 of their design studies conducted from 2005 to 2019 under the title “Porsche Unseen”.
But, of course, all 15 studies will not be divulged here – except for a unique trio that shows the progression from drawing to a finished model ready for series production.
Following the 328-page publication being made available, those intending to visit the Porsche Museum at Porscheplatz 1, in Stuttgart, Germany will be happy to note they will be integrating the models into their 2021 exhibition.
And as with all vehicles, the design process starts with a sketch which is followed by a 3D model.
As soon as an idea is to be further developed, small 1:3 scaled models are produced before realising in a 1:1 hard model.
“The virtual world is the first step, but you especially have to experience the unusual models in reality in order to understand whether a car has small, large or surprising proportions,” said Style Porsche vice president Michael Mauer.
So, without further ado, here are the three samples to tickle the palate of a Porsche fan.
Starting with zee Porsche 919 Street, its development stems from the technology used in the company’s Le Mans LMP1 challenger – the 919 Hybrid.
The promise here was to make the driving experience of the 919 Hybrid available to the owner of the 919 Steet.
How do you ask? Well, this car actually has the same dimensions and wheelbase as the championship-winning car and beneath its outer shell is a carbon monocoque along with the powerful 900PS hybrid racing drivetrain. That’s how.
Next, we have the Porsche Vision Spyder that presents itself in a spartan way that speaks loudest to purists with its minimalistic approach depicted by the radiator grilles over the mid-mounted engine, red graphic elements and the suggested fins at the rear.
The compact Porsche Vision Spyder (2019; 1:1 hard model) clearly calls to mind the Porsche 550-1500 RS Spyder from 1954.
At the same time, the study was intended to further develop the design identity of Porsche and provide a pool of ideas for future details – for example, the ultra-modern roll bar.
Here, we have something peculiar that’s something called the Porsche vision “Renndienst” and presented in a 1:1 model.
Porche allowed its designers to freely interpret a family-friendly space concept for six persons who came up with a futuristic “space shuttle”.
This study shows how the Porsche design DNA with its characteristic surface modelling can be transferred to an unknown vehicle segment for the brand and still have a comfortable and modular travel cabin.
With the driver sitting in a central driver’s seat, power will be provided by an all-electric drivetrain hidden in the underbody and as a result, occupants will be able to enjoy a rather generous amount of cabin space mixed together with Porsche-like flair.
