The new Porsche Macan has only been out a very short while, but in typical Porsche style, the new variants are starting to roll in. This time the automaker is Macan bacon with the more powerful V6 Macan S.
The all-new S comes with a new engine. It’s a 3.0L V6 turbo. Not a twin-turbo, though. Porsche has moved the twin-scroll turbo into the middle of the engine’s vee. That means the exhaust has to travel less distance and lose less heat before hitting the vanes. That allows for a quicker response when your right foot calls for more boost.
The new engine also has revised combustion chamber geometry that Porsche says mixes the fuel more efficiently and reduces emissions.
But while emissions are becoming increasingly important, it’s power that drivers really care about when it comes to sports crossovers. There, the Macan S delivers 348 hp and 352 lb-ft of torque. That’s 8 hp and 13 lb-ft of torque more than the outgoing model and 106 more than the base Macan.
With the S badge comes handling changes and revisions. Like new aluminum spring perches on the front axle. They reduce unsprung mass, which Porsche says also makes the steering more precise and increases ride comfort. The Macan S also has different sway bars for a more neutral balance.
Porsche Active Suspension Management adaptive dampers are onboard with continuously variable ride and adjustable ride height. Torque Vectoring Plus is on the options list.
The Macan S gets larger front brake discs. 10 mm wider at 360 mm and 2mm thicker. That’s a slight increase in brake, to cover a slight increase in power. If you want even more stopping force, Porsche Ceramic Composite Brakes are available.
Add the optional Sport Chrono package and the Macan S gets even quicker. It can then hit 100 km/h in a stop in just 5.1 seconds. 0.1 seconds quicker than the model it replaces. Top speed is 254 km/h, more than enough to get you to soccer practice on time.
On the outside, the S gets the changes Porsche applied to the standard Macan. Like LED headlights, with dynamic lights as optional. And the 3-D rear LED light bar that is also gracing the new 911. Inside, Porsche Communication Management has been revised and features a 10.9-inch screen.
New options inside include a GT sports steering wheel, the one that comes in the 911. It has mode switches built into the wheel, including a Sport Response button. If you pick the Sport Chrono Pack. Traffic Jam assist, Porsche’s low-speed adaptive cruise and lane centering, is optional. So is a heated windshield, which is a very nice feature to show off this time of year. Finally, there’s an optional cabin ionizer that works with the particulate filter to improve interior air quality.
If you’re looking to bring home a new Macan S, the order books are now open. Pricing starts from $63,000, with arrivals starting this summer.
