Porsche has joined forces with Disney to build a one-off recreation of Sally, the animated 911 from the Pixar movie Cars. The project was originally designed as a fun task for the two teams of designers to work on which would celebrate the film’s 20th anniversary – but in light of the worsening situation in Ukraine, the companies found a better use for the car.
To raise some money to support the people of Ukraine, Porsche and Disney will now auction off the finished car and donate all of the proceeds to charitable causes that will provide aid to the children and families affected by the conflict. Key charities include Girls Inc. and USA for UNHCR – the UN Refugee Agency.
Porsche’s reimagined version of Sally will be based on a 2022 911 Carrera instead of the 2002 model that formed the basis for the character in the animated films. However, judging by these concept drawings, the firm will look to retain as many of Sally’s cosmetic details as possible, including her paint finish and five-spoke alloy wheels.
Porsche hasn’t yet confirmed the final design of the special edition 911, although the brand has said it will feature a host of bespoke parts and accessories to keep its styling as faithful as possible to Sally’s. The car will also come with some unique badging, an image of the animated character on its dashboard and a matching one-of-a-kind watch.
Pixar’s Director of Franchise, Jay Ward, explained the thinking behind the project. ‘We wanted to help, somehow, and as a team we realised we could perhaps harness what we were working on to raise money. The whole project began with the premise that Sally’s character was devoted to helping others – and it seems right that this should continue 20 years on.’
Kjell Gruner, President and CEO of Porsche North America, echoed his comments, saying: ‘My own daughters grew up watching Sally, and it’s wonderful that we can mark a special anniversary with something meaningful that will help others.
‘Translating the spirit of Sally into a new 911 has been fascinating – this time the sports car is intended for our world, and to be driven and enjoyed – it will have a windscreen you can see out of, and shares its panels with the 911 we know and love. But, like Sally, its purpose is to help others – and that makes it extra special.’
