There may be a week left until the Geneva Motor Show opens its doors, but that hasn’t stopped Polestar from unveiling a new concept that’ll make its public debut at the motoring expo. The sleek and stylish Precept concept previews a four-door EV that could go up against the Tesla Model S and Jaguar’s upcoming electric XJ.
The Precept, which could arrive as early as 2024, highlights the Swedish firm’s intentions to not only lower its carbon footprint through electric energy, but also move to more sustainable materials both in and out of the car.
For instance, the four-seater cabin makes use of flax-based composites on the door panels and the backs of the seats. Not only is the material made up of natural fibres, it’s also 50% lighter than the cabin liners used in today’s cars. The seat fabrics, meanwhile, are made of recycled plastic bottles, while the headrests and carpets make use of cork and reclaimed fishnets respectively.
Plus, its battery electric powertrain means there’s no need for a grille at the front of the car. Polestar has instead used that area to house sensors, radars and cameras that run the vehicle’s semi-autonomous driver assistance features. These work in tandem with a roof-mounted lidar sensor, which looks a lot like a rally car’s roof scoop.
Polestar CEO Thomas Ingenlath said the Precept is “a response to the clear challenges our society and industry face. This is not a dream of a distant future, Polestar Precept previews future vehicles and shows how we will apply innovation to minimise our environmental impact.”
