The Polestar brand has made quite the name for itself in a relatively short space of time. Already the Polestar 2 is deemed to be a real rival for the popular Tesla Model 3, but let’s not forget the headline grabbing car that launched the brand. The Polestar 1 was something of a super GT that showcased the benefits of electrification. In 2021 production of this forerunner comes to an end with a special model.
While Polestar is known as an electric vehicle manufacturer, the Polestar 1 is actually a plug-in electric hybrid vehicle – a PHEV. Powered by a 2.0-litre turbo and supercharged petrol engine, supplemented by a pair of electric motors, this statement-maker produces 609bhp. Factor in 1,001Nm of torque and a 0-62mph run of just 4.2 seconds is unsurprising. All this performance while offering up to 77 miles of pure EV range.
Thomas Ingenlath, Polestar CEO, siad: “We pushed boundaries with this car, not only in terms of engineering but also in its design and execution. Polestar 1 set the tone for our brand and its genes are evident in Polestar 2 – as they will be in our future cars to come.” He continued “We didn’t design it to compete with other cars, and neither did we design it to suit a specific target customer. Polestar 1 was about pushing our own boundaries, exploring a new era for Polestar and launching the brand with a strong statement – and it’s done a great job of capturing the hearts and minds of fans, press and the lucky customers who own one.”
This sleek machine is getting one last hurrah before being retired later in 2021. Just 25 limited edition vehicles will be produced at a price of around £139,000. What do you get for your cash? Every example will be finished in matte gold paint, contrasting black alloy wheels, gold brake calipers, and gold interior stitching.
It would appear these final Polestar 1 cars have the Midas touch, a fitting farewell to the marque’s trailblazer.
