Rotating displays and square steering wheels are the future of Stellantis interiors.
The Peugeot Inception Concept has been revealed at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, showcasing what Stellantis has in mind for the interiors of its upcoming electric vehicles and some details of the power units we can expect. Peugeot has no plans to sell cars in the USA, but since Stellantis is so fond of sharing parts between the various brands, expect much of what you see here to feature elsewhere.
Peugeot's debut got lost in the background, mostly because Stellantis also chose CES to unveil the all-new Ram 1500 EV Revolution. Still, the Inception is worth taking a look at; it might be a wild concept that has zero chance of making it to production in its current form, but the interior boasts several highlights that might filter down to several Stellantis brands, including Ram, Jeep, Alfa Romeo, Chrysler, Dodge, Maserati, and Fiat.
Inception is based on the existing STLA Large platform, the same architecture used for the upcoming Jeep Recon, the all-electric Dodge Charger Daytona, and various Alfa Romeo EVs. Peugeot provided some interesting figures, giving us a glimpse of how much power we can look forward to.
The Inception Concept has the obligatory dual-motor setup, which will likely be the standard on all the models mentioned above. It uses a 100 kWh battery, suitable for a claimed range of nearly 500 miles. We wouldn't read too much into that, given the different aerodynamic properties of the various vehicles and the fact that the estimate is based on the WLTP test cycle.
The power output and charging figures are of interest, however. The total system output here is 670 horsepower, and the 800-volt architecture means 93 miles of range can be added in just five minutes. According to Peugeot, the car can also charge via induction, which is one of the next significant steps forward for EVs and similar to the tech found on the Ram 1500 EV Revolution.
The power output matches the mid-spec Daytona Concept with an eStage2 boost package.
The interior is ridiculous, but it provides a glimpse of how much interior space we can expect from cars built on this platform.
Peugeot says the square steering wheel was inspired by gaming. You can operate all of the car's features via a screen on the steering wheel, or the round infotainment display mounted directly in front of the driver. We can see the rotating display make it to production because it allows the driver to control various functions without being distracted by a console-mounted infotainment screen. The square wheel? Not so much.
Peugeot's press release also states that Stellantis is working on STLA AutoDrive, which it claims will be a Level 4 autonomous system that requires no interaction with the driver.
