Battery-powered version of Toyota’s small SUV is coming, but hybrid to hold green card for now
The next-generation 2024 Toyota C-HR is set to include a battery-electric model, adding a fresh tier to the compact SUV range that currently comprises conventional combustion engine power and petrol-electric hybrid in Australia.
Toyota has made no secret of its strategy to aggressively accelerate its EV portfolio, confirming the launch of 30 new electric cars this decade at a cost of almost $100 billion.
Now, Toyota sources have confirmed the C-HR is in a prime position to join the brand’s EV fleet.
Current Toyota C-HR
Our sources said that the TNGA modular and scalable platform architecture underpinning the small SUV (and other models) will be fundamental to the Japanese car giant’s electrification plans, and that a Toyota C-HR EV would be here “by the end of the decade”.
Media reports from Japanese auto website Response claim the new-generation Toyota C-HR will make its global debut in 2023, and that an EV version will follow during its lifecycle.
While the latter appears to hold water, our sources said there was no intel on an all-new Toyota C-HR busting out in 2023.
“No news on a new C-HR model at this stage or any time soon – nothing for the next couple for years,” they stated.
Toyota SUEV concept
Toyota could be preparing to reveal a new small electric SUV concept next year, following on from the prototypes presented six months ago by Toyota’s global CEO Akio Toyoda.
Toyota’s first global EV will be the RAV4-sized Toyota BZ4X, which is set to launch late this year or early in 2023.
Toyota is also plotting all-electric dual-cab utes, sports cars and off-road SUVs, including a reborn Toyota FJ Cruiser.
