All-new Toyota C-HR Breaks Cover
The Toyota C-HR stunned the public at the 2016 Geneva Motor Show with its distinctly funky design. It then demonstrated that, in addition to bringing new angles to the crossover segment, it had the road manners and cabin space to match.
It is now entering its second generation and brings a fresh new design, advanced technologies, and a range of electrified powerplants while maintaining its coupe-like styling cues.
Fresh new Design
Boasting a cleaner design, the front fascia is reminiscent of the bZ5X and new Prius, while Toyota says it has gone to extra lengths to make the new C-HR aerodynamically efficient as well as visually impressive, thanks to optimised airflow over and around the vehicle.
That being said, the new C-HR has precise profiling of the front bumper, while the rear roof spoiler has been tweaked for better airflow. Unlike the model it replaces, the new C-HR now comes with a funky full-width light bar with a 'C-HR' name in the middle which we quite like.
Speaking of dimensions, it is 4,360 mm long, 1,830 mm wide and depending on the variant, it is up to 1,564 mm tall, making it slightly bigger than its forebear.
It can be specified with wheels that measure up to 20″ depending on the variant. For added appeal, buyers can opt for the bi-tone paint, which extends the contrast black roof down to the rear bumper and into the C-HR's rear three-quarter section.
Overhauled Interior
The new C-HR has a redesigned interior with a 12.3″ fully digital instrument cluster and an infotainment system ranging from 8″ to 12.3″.
Furthermore, it now offers a digital key system that allows owners to access and start their vehicle via a smartphone for the first time. The C-HR also adds an ambient lighting system with up to 64 colours. Like current Toyota models, it has the latest Toyota Safety Sense portfolio of active safety and driver assistance features.
Carbon Neutrality at the Fore
The range is powered by four electrified powerplants as the brand pushes towards carbon neutrality.
First in line are the 1.8-litre and 2.0-litre hybridised units, joined by a 2.0-litre plug-in hybrid model. The 2.0-litre hybrid will be available with the optional all-wheel-drive system, while the former shoves power to the front axle.
Power is rated at 103 kW for the 1.8-litre, 145 kW for the 2.0-litre engine and 164 kW for the plug-in variant, with an electric range of up to 66 km when fully charged.
The new C-HR will be offered in two unique Premiere Edition models: GR Sport and High Premiere Edition, each boasting distinctive styling equipment.
A Much Better Option
The current generation of the C-HR is an overall excellent product that strikes all the right chords, and it's enriched with great looks, decent fuel economy and proper road manners. The new one promises to be a big step up in all departments.
