VW’s Toyota RAV4 fighter on track for late 2024 launch in Australia
The third-generation 2024 Volkswagen Tiguan continues to undergo development testing ahead of its arrival in Australian showrooms in late 2024, with the upmarket R-Line flagship of the all-new mid-size SUV captured for the first time in these spy pics.
We can also show you courtesy of these Automedia shots the standard Tiguan testing on the Nurburgring.
The formal global reveal of Volkswagen’s next-generation rival for the Toyota RAV4 and Mazda CX-5 is expected later this year ahead of its European release in 2024.
This is not the first time we’ve seen barely disguised examples of the new Tiguan testing. These shots were taken in the USA and these in Austria last year.
The black Tiguan in R-Line trim captured in these latest images driving on the road in Austria is distinguished by the large mesh vent in its lower grille mouth and inlets with strakes either side.
Both test vehicles have fake exhaust outlets in the rear valance, with the real outlets presumably tucked away under the bumper.

The alloy wheel design of the two Tiguans are different, but both appear to be around 18-20 inches in diameter.
The new Tiguan is expected to also feature full-width LED headlights and tail-lights.
To be based on a development of the current Tiguan’s MQB architecture, the new generation looks similar in size to its predecessor.
It also looks somewhat similar in appearance. However, it is expected to be more aerodynamic.
Both cars in these photographs are five-seaters. Reports out of Europe indicate the popular seven-seat Tiguan Allspace, which outsells the short-wheelbase five-seat Tiguan in Australia, might be renamed Tayron for the new generation. This is a badge currently reserved for China.
Inside, spy pics published overseas show a new infotainment touch-screen sitting proud of the dashboard rather than embedded as in the current generation.
While nothing has been confirmed yet, the new Tiguan is expected to come with petrol and diesel drivetrains supplemented by various levels of hybrid electrification.
A battery-electric Tiguan is also under development, but that will be based on VW’s MEB+ EV architecture and won’t be seen before 2025-2026.
The Tiguan R-Line has traditionally been a very popular model in Australia. However, production shortfalls have cruelled supply.
There are currently two R-Line variants offered in Australia – the $57,790 162TSI turbo-petrol and $59,290 147TDI turbo-diesel.
