Upcoming Toyota C-HR hybrid SUV spied testing at the Nurburgring – appears close in design to C-HR Prologue concept
- More spacious interior than outgoing C-HR
- Self-charging and plug-in hybrid powertrains
- Due to arrive by end of 2023
The upcoming Toyota C-HR crossover replacement has been spotted undergoing testing at the Nurburgring in Germany. The latest images of the camouflaged hybrid SUV reveal a look very close in design to the Toyota C-HR Prologue concept revealed in 2022.
Even under wraps, the C-HR’s design looks aggressive, yet compact, and appears to retain the C-shaped LED headlight design featured on the concept car. This is a striking design cue that’s also seen on the recently launched Toyota Prius sold outside the UK. Many of the C-HR’s styling cues are also taken from the brand’s fully-electric bZ4X SUV, such as its angular silhouette and sharp front end, dubbed the ‘Hammerhead’ by Toyota’s designers.
The rear of the C-HR appears to get a full-width light bar and a chunky three-tiered boot lid with winglets at the top in place of a traditional spoiler. There’s no rear windscreen wiper, and it’s unclear whether this will feature on the production model. Previous preview images of the concept also revealed a contrasting roof colour and rear section, like that seen on higher-end Aygo X models.
Pictures of the interior have yet to surface, but Toyota has said to expect a complete overhaul compared to the outgoing C-HR, featuring higher quality materials and a more spacious, airy feel. This should be a welcome upgrade compared with the somewhat claustrophobic feel of the first-generation model.
While we don’t know the specifics at this stage, Toyota has announced that the next-generation C-HR will still be offered with a self-charging hybrid powertrain. However, the Japanese brand has announced the new car will also be available with plug-in hybrid power, too; once again, specifications are hard to pinpoint at this stage, but expect the PHEV to offer a pure-electric range of over 30 miles.
The Mk2 Toyota C-HR is expected to be revealed in Europe soon, with production and sales anticipated to start by the end of 2023. Prices are yet to be confirmed, but with prices of the outgoing model starting from around £34,000, we’d expect the new model to get a slightly more expensive base price.
