As we’re getting closer to the official debut of the fully electric second-generation Porsche Macan, new sightings of camouflaged prototypes during real-world testing reveal more information about the upcoming SUV. This time, our spies were able to take a quick peek inside after a prototype model broke down for unknown reasons, while also snapping a few shots of the frameless windows.
The interior is still heavily camouflaged and is far from its final form, but for what it’s worth, it retains the oval-shaped digital instrument cluster we saw in another tester in the summer. [Updated 12/16/2021]
The previous spy pictures show a group of three Macan EV prototypes testing alongside a Taycan Turbo S. All prototypes were still wearing the usual, and quite misleading, headlight stickers, window line graphics, fake exhaust tips, and plastic patches on both front and rear bumpers – just like the ones that appeared on Porsche’s official preview from May 2021.
However, this time they were caught in action, and two of them came fitted with an active rear spoiler. This is not as wild as in the Cayenne Turbo GT, but it adds visual drama and contributes to more downforce when deployed at certain speeds.
Similar to the Cayenne Coupe, the electric Macan has a sloping roofline and pronounced shoulders for a sporty stance. The silhouette appears to be more aerodynamic compared to its predecessor, with wider tracks on both axles and 21-inch wheels. The SUV also gets the signature four-element LED headlights and horizontally arranged LED taillights like most of the Porsche range.
Inside, the Macan will inherit a digital instrument cluster, a large infotainment touchscreen placed closer to the driver, Porsche’s classic three-spoke steering wheel, and a high-positioned central console.
The Porsche Macan EV prototype has frameless windows
The Macan will be based on the EV-dedicated PPE (Premium Platform Electric) architecture developed by Porsche and Audi. The same platform will underpin the upcoming Audi Q6 e-tron and A6 e-tron before appearing in several new models from both brands.
While we don’t have any information on specific figures, Porsche has confirmed that the Macan will feature a significantly longer range compared to the Taycan. The electric SUV is expected to be offered in two battery capacities featuring 800-volt technology. Naturally, it will come in a number of different power guises, including the flagship Turbo S which is rumored to boast some pretty impressive performance figures.
The fully-electric Porsche Macan is expected to be unveiled in 2022, with production starting towards the end of next year. The current ICE-powered model that was introduced in 2014 and got facelifted in 2018 and in 2021, is expected to march on for a few years alongside the EV version until it gets axed, probably in 2024, due to emission regulations.
