First glimpse of special 911 suggests ducktail spoiler set for return
Porsche has released a new teaser of its reborn Porsche 911 Sport Classic ahead of its expected reveal later this year. Posting a story on its official Porsche Newsroom Instagram profile, the first peak of the retro-inspired version of the latest 992-generation-based 911 Sport Classic shows off a car painted in a similar hue to the 2009 911 Sport Classic special edition. Featuring the caption “shades of the past”, it appears the limited-edition Sport Classic will feature a modified front bumper with squarer side intakes that flank a slimmer central air dam.
On the bonnet, unusual blue and light-grey bonnet stripes are teased, suggesting the blue and grey-on-grey colour theme continues elsewhere.
Not pictured, but hinted at within the paint booth as the blue paint is applied, is the new 911 Sport Classic’s trademark ducktail spoiler that on the 2009 911 Sport Classic paid tribute to the legendary 1973 911 2.7 Carrera RS. No date has been officially released for the 911 Sport Classic with the German car-maker insisting we ‘stay tuned’ instead. Back in 2009, Porsche decided to make just 250 of the previous 911 Sport Classic that was based on the 997-series 911.
As well as the retro rear wing, the Sport Classic also adopted a modern take on the old car’s Fuch alloy wheels, had a double-bubble roof and featured an uprated version of the 911 Carrera S 3.8-litre direct-injection flat-six-cylinder that produced 300kW (up 17kW on the standard car.) Matched to a short-shift six-speed manual gearbox. No PDK version will be offered. Porsche claimed the Sport Classic’s accelerated from 0-100km/h in 4.6sec and topped-out at 302km/h. Suspension and brakes were also upgraded, in addition to its Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) sports suspension and lower ride height (20mm). Finally, the special 911 Sport Classic bagged an LSD and carbon ceramic composite brakes. It’s thought the Sport Classic reboot will follow this formula and could possibly be based on the upcoming 911 GT3 Touring as a starting point. It’s not just the 911 Sport Classic Porsche will unveil in the coming months. A 911 GT3 RS, 911 Safari/Dakar and 911 hybrid have all been spotted testing both on track and road.
Expect Porsche to begin teasing them all ahead of their 2022/2023 respective launches.
