Arguably the most desirable 992-series 911 has broken cover early just hours after official tease
Less than a day after Porsche’s initial tease, the 2023 Porsche 911 Sport Classic has appeared in full online, with Car and Driver Greece reporting that 1250 examples of the heritage-themed sports car will be produced ahead of orders opening on Thursday (April 28).
Like its 997-generation predecessor, the new 992 Sport Classic is awash with classically-inspired styling cues and historic touches, chief among which is the duck-tail spoiler which serves as a direct tribute to the 1972 Carrera RS 2.7.
At the front is a much bulkier take on the current 911 Turbo’s square intake and bumper combination, while the rear haunches also look to be far wider than those on the standard Carrera or GTS, again as per the Turbo and Turbo S.
Those haunches feed into an equally unique rear fascia that blends design elements from both the lesser and higher-end variants, neatly complementing the unique spoiler.
Other unique touches include a recessed roof, bespoke five-spoke alloy wheels (reportedly spanning 20 inches up front with 21s at the rear) and a classy grey body colour with white heritage stripes and decals adorning the doors, bonnet and roof.
The classic theme is continued within the cabin through the inclusion of a two-tone black and caramel dash, caramel leather upholstery and checkered cloth inserts on both the seats and the door panels.
Traditionalists and purists will also be elated to hear the only transmission available will reportedly be a seven-speed manual which, in an added nostalgic touch, will send power exclusively to the rear wheels.
Whereas the current 911 Carrera is powered by a twin-turbocharged 3.0-litre flat six, it seems the new Sport Classic will be powered by a down-rated version of the 911 Turbo’s bigger 3.8-litre engine which, in this guise, will churn out 405kW.
For reference, the 922-generation 911 Turbo develops 427kW/750Nm while the ballistic Turbo S ups those figures to 478kW/800Nm – a Newton-metre count for the Sport Classic is currently MIA.
The previous version shipped as standard with Porsche’s Active Suspension Management (PASM) system as well as carbon ceramic brakes, a lower ride height and bespoke spring tune to round out its increased appeal over the base models.
Such changes will also more than likely be applied here too given the amount of firepower being bestowed on the rear axle, which is enough to see the new Sport Classic take the title as the most powerful three-pedal Porsche 911 to date.
The Car and Driver report claims orders for the limited-run special will open as of April 28, with European deliveries set to commence in July.
Obviously it remains to be seen if any 992 Sport Classics make their way Down Under, let alone when and for how much.
If the Greek publication’s report holds true, we should have full details and confirmation of the Sport Classic within a matter of days so, as Porsche said overnight, stay tuned.
