android, new polestar 3 revealed: price, specs and release date

Polestar has launched the new Polestar 3 electric SUV. The new Polestar will go on sale in October and rival premium electric SUVs like the Audi E-tron and Mercedes-Benz EQC.

The Polestar 3 is the Swedish company’s first electric SUV. It will also be one of the best electric cars for range, with Polestar claiming its new EV will cover up to 373 miles on a full battery charge. The Polestar 3 goes on sale in October and joins the 1 and the 2 in Polestar’s family of premium electric cars.

New Polestar 3 price and release date

The Polestar 3 SUV will go on sale in October 2022 and the first new car deliveries will most likely start in early 2023. Polestar hasn’t released any pricing details for its new all-electric SUV but the range is expected to start in the region of £60,000, which means it will not qualify for the electric car grant.

Details on battery capacity and power outputs are thin on the ground; however, we expect the Polestar 3 to be launched with four-wheel drive only. High-performance models will be capable of covering 0-62mph in under five seconds and be electronically restricted to 155mph, which means high-spec versions of the Polestar 3 will be pitched squarely at Tesla buyers.

New Polestar 3 styling

The Polestar 3 SUV uses a lot of its styling cues from the Polestar 2, with ‘Thor hammer’ LED headlights, short overhangs and a large plastic grille at the front. The chunky rear LED lights wrap around the rear of the Polestar 3 while its slanted roof and rear spoiler give the shape of the car a sporty silhouette.

The bonnet features futuristic air channelling vents that aid the aerodynamic flow of the vehicle, while the flush door handles will pop out when you unlock the car before closing flat against the bodywork as you pull away.

The latest images of the Polestar 3 show the production-ready with a full-length glass panoramic roof, 20-inch alloy wheels and bright yellow brake calipers. The upright stance gives a hint at what the Porsche Macan-rivalling Polestar 4 will look like when it is launched in 2023.

Polestar is owned by Volvo and its Chinese parent company, Geely. As a result, it’ll share its mechanical platform with the next-generation Volvo XC90 – which means the body will most likely be around five metres in length and more than two metres wide.

The options list for the Polestar 3 will be comprehensive, with the choice of 19-, 20- and possibly 21-inch wheels. Buyers will also get at least six bodywork colours to choose from, along with a tow bar, roof rack and tinted rear windows.

Polestar 3 practicality and interior

The Polestar 3 is based on the mechanical platform of the new Volvo XC90, which will go on sale in 2023.  However, unlike the current XC90, the Polestar 3 will not get the option of seven seats (which means it’ll be a five-seater).

That said, the Polestar 3 is designed with a family SUV practicality and comfort in mind. This means you’ll get five large seats and lots of head and legroom across both rows. The Polestar 3 will also be child seat friendly with two Isofix anchor points for the outer rear seats and possibly a third in the middle. The boot will be large enough to cater for four large suitcases and a child’s buggy and the rear seats will fold flat to provide even more loadspace.

The Polestar 3 will feature the company’s latest Android Automotive infotainment system, which has already won a hatful of innovation awards for its use in the Polestar 2. The system is the first car infotainment system to be powered solely by an Android operating system. It features Google Maps and  Google Assistant as standard, which means you can issue voice commands like “hey Google, play some music” or “navigate home”.

The Android Automotive infotainment system is displayed on a large and easy-to-use 11-inch screen in the Polestar 2 and we expect this unit to be carried over the Polestar 3 SUV, which means you’ll get some physical buttons for adjusting the audio volume and selecting radio stations. You’ll also get lots of steering wheel controls, so you can adjust the cruise control or choose your favourite music without lifting a hand from the wheel.

New Polestar 3 range, power and performance

The Polestar 3 has the best maximum range of any electric vehicle in the Swedish carmaker’s line-up. The Polestar 3 will officially travel up to 373 miles on a single charge, which is around 120 miles more than you’ll get from either the Audi e-tron or Mercedes-Benz EQC.

Polestar hasn’t released any official details on power or performance. However, like the Polestar 2, we expect the Polestar 3 to be offered in a choice of models that will include dual and single motor powers and possibly the choice of standard and long range batteries (which means the cheapest versions may not have the 373-mile range).

The Polestar 3 will be four-wheel drive only at launch but a single motor two-wheel drive models could be added to the line-up in late 2023. Maximum power outputs will most likely exceed the 408PS and 660Nm of torque offered in the highest spec of the Polestar 2, which means Polestar’s new electric SUV will be capable of covering 0-62mph in under five seconds and be electronically restricted to a top speed of 155mph.

Like all modern electric cars, the Polestar 3 will be compatible with the UK’s 100kW fast charger network. This means you can boost the battery from a few bars of power to 80% charge in around 40 minutes – perfect for breaking up a long motorway journey with a coffee break. At home, a full charge from a 11kW wallbox will take around nine or ten hours.

Parking cameras,  sensors and an auto park function will be available, along with adaptive cruise control that will automatically control the Polestar 3’s speed and distance from the vehicle in front. Polestar says, over time, it will offer autonomous motorway driving that will rival Tesla’s autopilot function.
