It’s official! The SsangYong name will be replaced by the name of the brand’s new parent company, KG Group, with ‘KG Mobility’ set to be the brand’s moniker from here on in.
Since early 2021, KG has been in the process of acquiring and paying off the debts racked up by the South Korean brand, with “repayment of the rehabilitation debt” having been completed in November last year.
Now, the brand has confirmed its shareholders agreed to change the name from SsangYong to KG Mobility in an effort to shed the past, as well as allow the company to look to the future of transport.
In a press release, an official from KG Mobility said the name change is only the first step in the company’s shift to a broader range of mobility focus including software-defined vehicles and self-driving cars.
“We changed our name after 35 years and took the first step toward change and development into a future mobility company,” the statement said.
“We will grow and develop into a respected and proud company as a future mobility partner by focusing on the field of mobility technology.”
The new parent company bought SsangYong for 950 billion won (AU$1.102 billion), but it’s not the first time the carmaker has changed names.
The company began in January 1954 as Ha Dong-hwan Motors, but became Dong-A Motors in 1977 and then Ssangyong Motors in 1988.
KG Automotive now also will adopt the slogan “Go Different” as well as applying the new branding to models from the Torres EVX onwards.
