Codenamed J100, the new Torres signals a new design direction for the brand
- Second full EV from SsangYong
- Arrives late 2023
- A new SsangYong pickup has also been confirmed
The newest SsangYong EV, previously codenamed J100, has been confirmed for release in 2023 with the model name Torres. It will take SsangYong in a new direction under the ‘Powered by Toughness’ design directive.
The Torres will be the second all-electric model after the Korando e-Motion and will slot into the range between the medium-sized Korando SUV and larger Rexton. A spokesman for SsangYong said: “This move will create an additional segment in the market and will open up new opportunities for us.”
The name of the new model was inspired by the Patagonian national park, Torres del Paine, and the spectacular views it contains. SsangYong says that the name encapsulates the sense of escapism and adventure; something it is hoped can be translated into the design and function of the new Torres.
Technical specifications for the Torres are yet to be released, so range and performance of the final production model remain as predictions and speculation for now. What we do know is that the success of both this car and the Korando e-Motion is critical for SsangYong, who have been experiencing financial difficulties recently; the brand entered receivership in late 2020.
SsangYong is positioning the new models as rugged off-road SUVs able to take on tricky terrain and directing attention at a segment that is currently dominated by well-established brands like Land Rover. The push for EVs and direction towards finding potential gaps in the market may bolster interest, especially if rivals don’t have a comparable model to compete with.
The rendered images of the Torres show it out in the wilds to further the tough off-road look. Earlier images positioned the new Torres alongside the Korando and Musso to identify it with the brand and possibly suggesting a new Musso pick-up truck might be closely related to the Torres.
SsangYong describes the Torres as a ‘larger mid-size SUV’, so it’s likely to offer better practicality compared with many of its rivals and may also cost less to buy. Prices and full specifications will emerge nearer the car’s release date.
