This is the new Lamborghini Huracan EVO Spyder, which the company has launched with a slogan that’s either a brilliant piece of satire or socially tone deaf: celebrating life in the open air. This is a £190,000 convertible, from Italy, launched when much of the world is in lockdown and about to emerge directly into a recession, probably.
Hey ho. It does look amazing. It is amazing. It’s a bit difficult to keep up with the variations of the Huracan, but this is a convertible version of the rear-wheel drive Huracan Evo, which came in January and was based last year’s four-wheel drive Huracan Evo – a version itself based on the Huracan Performante, with that car's power bump but not its aerodynamic tweaks. Got all that?
The Performante version is the Huracan at its most serious, costing £215,000 and featuring a host of aero assistance and chassis tweaks – to the extent that it’s astonishingly quick around the Nurburgring, if you’re interested in that sort of thing. This Evo has no spoiler and fewer carbon fibre bits, but it does have a lightweight soft top and a fancy traction control system (called P-TCS) that’s designed to aggressively tuck the car back in “after sharp cornering or drifting”. Lamborghini’s words.
What you’re looking at here is a Huracan Spyder with 602bhp going to the rear wheels via a seven-speed twin-clutch automatic. That’s as compared to the standard Huracan’s 572bhp, although both share the same very loud 5.2-litre V10 engine, sans turbocharging. The 0-62mph time is 3.5 seconds and the top speed is 201mph, officially. The roof can be opened at speeds up to 31mph, if you’re interested in that sort of thing as well.
It has adaptable suspension with driving modes, and because it doesn’t require a complex front differential and driveshafts for the front axle, it’s 40kg lighter than the four-wheel drive version. The chassis is relatively light too, formed largely from aluminium and carbon fibre – not quite as light or modern as the carbon fibre tub that McLaren uses, but still fairly serious.
It’s on sale now, with first deliveries due in summer all being well.
