The new generation Volkswagen Tiguan has been spied testing in the United States. While the second-gen of the SUV was revealed globally in 2015, it received a mid-cycle facelift in mid-2020. Now, the German auto giant is readying the third-generation model of the Tiguan, which may debut sometime later this year.
New-gen Volkswagen Tiguan: Exterior
The new-gen Tiguan prototype spotted in the US was hardly covered in camouflage. If the spy pictures are to go by, the brand has used covering for its face, especially on the grille. Additionally, the new bumper could get air inlets at the corners in order to improve aerodynamic fuel efficiency. Volkswagen is also expected to bestow it with new headlight and taillight design elements.
Furthermore, as seen in the spy shots, the cuts and creases on body panels, especially the shoulder line, do not appear as prominent as on the on-sale model. However, the SUV is expected to bear identical design language and silhouette as the current model. Meanwhile, it is believed that the automaker could use an upgraded version of the MQB platform for the new Tiguan.
New-gen Volkswagen Tiguan: Interior
Inside, Volkswagen could completely overhaul the cabin, bringing in a new and large touchscreen infotainment system, a fully digital instrument cluster, toggle-style gear selector switch, and fresh upholstery, among others.
Other features may include a panoramic sunroof, cooled and heated seats, a hi-fi surround sound system, updated advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), all-LED lights, powered front seats, a wireless charging pad, and USB Type-C fast charging ports.
New-gen Volkswagen Tiguan: Powertrain
We expect the all-new Tiguan to carry forward its petrol, diesel, and hybrid powertrain options for the western markets. However, Volkswagen offers the current Tiguan with a 2.0-litre petrol engine in India. The India-spec new-gen Tiguan may also retain the same engine coupled with a seven-speed DSG transmission.
Since Volkswagen, like other carmakers, is pushing for the electrification of its entire portfolio, the new-gen Tiguan’s petrol and diesel engines might benefit from the 48V mild hybrid functionality. The brand could also upgrade its current plug-in hybrid (PHEV) system to offer more range and efficiency.
