VW is one of South Africa’s most popular carmakers, as evidenced by its consistent placing in each month’s best-sellers lists.
The German manufacturer has been a staple of the local car scene for decades, thanks in no small part to its Eastern Cape factory that has produced vehicles both for domestic usage and for export overseas to markets like the UK.
Volkswagen’s long history in South Africa means that consumers have an extensive catalogue to choose from, comprising hatchbacks, bakkies, SUVs, and people carriers.
The locally-made Polo Vivo and Polo are of course still the most sought-after VWs in the country, based on last month’s sales data, in spite of the global trend of crossovers slowly replacing hatchbacks.
That being said, the company’s most affordable SUV, the T-Cross came in third place, though its 480 units don’t come close to the thousands of hatchbacks that were sold.
The most intriguing entry is the next-gen Amarok bakkie, which placed fourth on the list with 273 units, putting it ahead of the Tiguan – VW’s best-performing model internationally – in fifth place with 246 units.
It shows that, while the Amarok doesn’t sell the same volume as its competitors, such as the Isuzu D-Max, Toyota Hilux, and its architectural twin, the Ford Ranger, it is still an undeniably popular vehicle for the automaker’s local division.
Other units to make it into the top 10 include the Polo Sedan, the T-Roc and Taigo premium crossovers, the Golf GTI and R, and the Kombi MPV.
