PETALING JAYA: The Transport Ministry says it is in discussion with Projek Lebuhraya Utara Selatan Bhd (PLUS) to install speed cameras along the Penang Bridge, including adding additional cameras on its highways.
“PLUS said that they were willing to bear the cost to set up the Automated Enforcement System (AES) cameras across its highways, without charging the government. It is a proposal from PLUS that we will study,” Anthony Loke said during a press conference at the Land Public Transport Agency office on Friday.
Loke said currently there was still no decision on where the cameras will be installed, and how many will be installed, adding that all the details were being worked out.
He added that the location where the cameras will be placed have to be determined by Road Transport Department (JPJ) as well as the Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (Miros).
“There are reasons and technical considerations to be taken into account. Once we have studied this, especially at accident hotspot areas, then we will install them.
“The reason (to install the cameras) is not to collect summonses or to trap people so that they will be summoned, but it is to warn road users to slow down at those places to reduce accidents,” he said.
Loke added that AES cameras have to be managed and operated by JPJ, as pictures taken by the cameras are sent to JPJ.
It was reported that PLUS will submit a proposal to the authorities to install speed cameras on all six expressways under its jurisdiction, including the Penang Bridge.
Its managing director, Datuk Azman Ismail, said PLUS will bear the cost of installation, adding that the authorities would have to operate them, as it cannot issue traffic summonses.
PLUS’ proposal comes following the death of Moey Yun Peng, whose Mazda CX-5 plunged into the sea after it was hit by a Toyota Vios on the Penang Bridge
