Mercedes-Benz Unveils the All-New GLC Coupe with Hybrid Powertrains
Since 2016, the Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupe has been competing in the same market segment as other sporty SUVs like the BMW X4, Porsche Macan, and Audi Q5 Sportback. It's essentially a sportier version of the GLC SUV.
It's now entering its second generation, wearing a sportier silhouette than before while following the same design tweaks as the regular model that debuted sometime in 2022.
That said, the coupe's exterior features an updated lower fascia, and slimmer headlights, while the rear gets a revised rear fascia with slimmer taillights. As standard, the new GLC Coupe comes with the Avantgarde exterior trim that kits it with 18″ light alloy wheels plus the chrome package.
Buyers can specify the AMG Line trim that adds 19 or 20″ alloy wheels with mixed-profile tyres and wheel arch liners in the vehicle's colour.
The interior has gone through a major overhaul, thanks to the inclusion of a 12.3″ driver display mounted floating-landscape style plus an 11.9″ portrait-oriented centre touchscreen like the one featured in the C-Class and S-Class models.
Mercedes-Benz has redesigned the head restraints and their connection to the backrests, while a leather-lined dashboard with nappa-look beltlines is offered as standard with the AMG Line.
Regarding the dimensions, the GLC Coupe boasts an overall length of 4,763 mm (31 mm longer and 5 mm higher than its predecessor). Its height remains unchanged at 1,890 mm.
The increased dimensions allowed engineers to stretch the boot space by 45 litres to 545 litres compared to the outgoing model. Folding down the rear seats will expand the boot space to 1,490 litres – 90 more than its forebear. As for the hybrid models, the area is a margin smaller at 390 and 1,335 litres, with the seats folded flat due to the placement of the battery pack.
Mercedes-Benz SA has yet to confirm the local model range, but its overseas line-up consists of the GLC 200, GLC 300, GLC 220d, GLC 300d, and GLC 300e, GLC 400e and GLC 300de plug-in hybrids.
The 200, 300, 220d and 300d benefit from the brand's 48-volt mild-hybrid system for increased efficiency, while all “e” designated models are of the plug-in hybrid variety. All GLC Coupes receive a 9-speed automatic transmission, with Merc's 4Matic all-wheel-drive system also featuring as standard across the board.
At this stage, Mercedes-Benz hasn't revealed pricing for the GLC Coupe, but we anticipate it to reach local dealership floors in the fourth quarter of the year.
Over the year and throughout its first generation, the Mercedes-Benz GLC did enough to cement its position in the brand's line-up, and the second iteration promises to become a hit once again.
