Mercedes-Benz Passenger Cars sold around 30,000 battery-electric vehicles in Q3 2022. That is more than twice as many as in the same period of the previous year. The Group’s sister company Mercedes-Benz Vans delivered an additional 3,300 electric vehicles between July and September.
In the German carmaker’s passenger car division, around 30,000 BEV vehicles sold represent an increase of 115 per cent compared to the third quarter of 2021 and an increase of 28 per cent compared to the second quarter of 2022. If plug-in hybrids and e-vehicles from Smart are included, sales in the third quarter amount to 75,900 units (+23 per cent). This means that electric car sales grew disproportionately to Mercedes’ overall sales, which increased by 21 per cent to 517,800 units compared to Q2.
These figures show that 5.8 per cent of Mercedes-Benz vehicles sold are purely electric cars, which amounts to 30,000 BEVs delivered. If you add the PHEVs and Smart EVs, 14.7 per cent of all new Mercedes are at lease partly powered by electricity.
From January to September, Mercedes sold 75,400 BEVs worldwide, which corresponds to an increase of 126 per cent compared to the same period in 2021. September set a new monthly sales record with 13,100 BEVs. If PHEVs and electric cars from Smart are also included, the cumulative sales from January to September rise to 215,400 units – an increase of 17 per cent.
By comparison, BMW published its car sales figures on Monday. The Munich-based company delivered 52,306 all-electric vehicles of the two brands BMW and Mini in Q3, and 128,196 all-electric vehicles in the current year – more than 50,000 units more than Mercedes. Since BMW no longer reports PHEVs separately, a comparison with the 215,400 vehicles at Mercedes-Benz Cars is not possible.
Sales of electric cars are doing particularly well for Mercedes in Europe: from January to September, one in ten Mercedes-Benz cars sold in Europe was a battery-electric vehicle, according to the manufacturer. The EQA, as the best-selling electric car, reached 14,900 units (+29 per cent).
Parallel to the passenger car division, Mercedes-Benz Vans also presented its quarterly figures. Here, the division delivered around 3,300 electric vehicles in Q3 2022. This is 14 per cent less than in the same period of 2021. Across all drive types, Mercedes-Benz Vans sold 99,700 vans between July and September, an increase of 4 per cent compared to the same period last year.
Despite the rather weak third quarter from an eMobility point of view, Mercedes-Benz Vans says that its electric sales in the first nine months of the year were a third higher than the previous year’s figure.
