STUTTGART: Mercedes-Benz’s C-Class line-up just got larger with the addition of a sporty Coupe into the family.
Aesthetically, the new coupe’s bonnet is 60mm-longer than its predecessor, with much of its styling cues mimicking the S-Class Coupe seen in its flared wheel arches, low-slung roofline and the integrated trapezoidal exhaust tips in the rear bumper to name a few.
It rolls on 17-inch wheels, but with the AMG body-styling parts list available, it allows owners the choice of sportier bumpers and sills, a diamond radiator grille and larger 18-inch AMR light-alloy wheels.
A choice of four petrol and two diesel engines (all Euro 6 emissions standard compliant) will be found under the hood and will be equipped with Eco start/stop function while being up to 27% more efficient than before.
The engine line-up starts with the 154bhp 1.6-litre petrol engine for the C 180 before moving to the 2.0-litre engine for the C 200, 250 and 300 with outputs of 181bhp, 207bhp and 241bhp, respectively.
With a 2.1-litre turbo diesel engine that features selective catalytic reduction (SCR) technology for exhaust gas after-treatment, it be used in the C 220 d with an output of 165bhp, while the C 250 d gets a beefed-up version at 200bhp.
The chassis of the C-Class Coupe possesses predominantly of aluminium for a lighter and stiffer construction, but Mercedes-Benz isn’t divulging the type of metal used for its wings, bonnet and bootlid, merely claiming them to be of light-alloy components.
Shape-wise, the new coupe is more aerodynamic at 0.26Cd (coefficient of drag) and has dimensionally grown with a wheelbase of 2,920mm (+80mm), while overall dimensions stands at 4,781mm-long (+95mm), 1,427mm-tall (-15mm).
Mercedes-Benz says its cabin will be ultimately sporty and will feature individually designed trim elements as well as sports seats and an automatic belt feeder.
Optional extras include the AMG Line, which allows the Chrome package, Artico man-made leather and Dinamica in black microfibre available for the interior as well as a multifunction flat-bottom sports steering wheel and AMG sports pedals.
The new coupe uses a more sensitive and sportier suspension that increases its agility and stability, but it can be taken up a notch via the German carmaker’s Airmatic air suspension system that features the all-round self-levelling ability.
The new coupe will first arrive in showrooms across Europe by December with other markets to follow.
