The production version of the electric G-Class is nearing production.
Mercedes-Benz is making good progress with the all-electric G-Class, known as the Mercedes EQG. The battery-powered SUV was recently spotted testing on German roads, caught by car paparazzo walkoARTvideos.
The video reveals the EQG covered in a distinctive electric-themed blue camouflage, showcasing its unique identity from the other wrapped prototypes typically seen in the area. The overall design remains largely unchanged from the iconic boxy shape of the G-Wagen, and EQG is expected to mirror the concept unveiled in 2021.
Expected design elements include the famous round LED daytime running lights, a closed-off grille, extended fenders, the rear lights' position, and the spare wheel's squircle casing.
We have yet to see an official image of the EQG's cabin, but recent spy shots reveal a non-gimmicky layout, which means it will retain the non-electric G-Class interior design. We can see a new steering wheel with capacitive buttons and a screen in front of the driver, but these features might also be part of an upcoming G-Class facelift. It doesn't have the infamous Hyperscreen, but you can be sure it will come standard with all the latest MBUX functionality.
In terms of specifications, we know a few details about the forthcoming EQG based on various reports and recent sightings. It will retain the G-Class's ladder frame chassis and will be equipped with four electric motors, each powering an individual wheel. Although the power and torque figures remain under wraps, the EQG's quad-motor setup is expected to churn out a combined output of around 600 to 670 horsepower.

The exact battery details are still unconfirmed, but the EQG is rumored to offer a range of over 310 miles on a full charge. Speculations suggest that the EQG's battery pack will incorporate a 108-kilowatt-hour pack, similar to the one in the Mercedes EQS SUV. However, the EQG is expected to use a revolutionary silicon anode chemistry technology that promises a 20% increase in range, enhanced charging speeds, and a more sustainable approach to production.
We have to say, it's quite disconcerting watching a G-Class drive by without the telltale sound of a V8 engine. An all-electric off-roader is a sensational idea, but a silent G is quite eerie.
The Mercedes-Benz EQG is expected to debut by the end of the year or within the next year, either as a 2024 or 2025 model.
