McLaren has confirmed it will bring a V6 hybrid supercar to market in 2021 which will be the first in a series which is set to replace the current Sports Series line up. So far McLaren has only deployed hybrid technology in one off cars like the Speedtail and P1.
The engine will be entirely new but little more is known for sure about it other than it will be V6 and hybrid, while McLaren is simply calling the car a High-Performance Hybrid (HPH). It is thought the car, which is in its testing phase now, will be a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) and rear wheel drive, but this isn’t confirmed.
The car will be built on a new carbon fibre structure which McLaren imaginatively labels the ‘McLaren Carbon Lightweight Structure’ (MCLS), and promises it will ‘elevate McLaren’s pioneering lightweight chassis technologies to new heights…’
Mike Flewitt, CEO, McLaren Automotive, said: “This all-new McLaren supercar is the distillation of everything we have done to date; all that we have learned and achieved. This is a new kind of McLaren for a new era, an extraordinary drivers’ car that offers blistering performance as well as an all-electric range capable of covering most urban journeys. We see this new McLaren as a true ‘next generation’ supercar and cannot wait to show it to customers.”
