It’s official: the McLaren 720S has been discontinued, with new customers now being informed they cannot order the car any more. The end of the production run concludes arguably one of the most exciting chapters of the supercar story of the modern era.
This story is not all doom and gloom, though. In an interview with Automotive News, Nicolas Brown, McLaren’s president of the Americas region, confirmed a replacement is already in the works. He refused to draw out specifics, but did say eager customers were already placing deposits with dealers even though the new car has not been publicly revealed. According to Brown, the 720S replacement is “sold out through deep into 2024 without even having spoken about this.”
Beyond this, nothing is known at this point. In December 2022, the British carmaker announced a collaboration with Lockheed Martin on a “futuristic supercar design,” but it is unclear if that has anything to do with the 720S replacement.

The McLaren 720S debuted at the 2017 Geneva auto show as a replacement for the McLaren 650S. With its lightweight chassis and 718-hp turbocharged V8 heart, the supercar delivered performance that challenged much more expensive hypercars. It could sprint to 60 mph (96 km/h) in just 2.6 seconds, and had a top speed of about 212 mph (341 km/h). Unsurprisingly, it quickly became a fan favourite within the supercar community. Canada even got its own special edition 720S.
We expect more details to be revealed in the coming months. For now, McLaren continues to focus on the roll-out of its new hybrid Artura to its dealers. One thing is clear: the McLaren 720S has set a very high bar for whatever is coming next.
