Maserati reveals MC20 supercar in Singapore
Singapore – Maserati launched their mid-engined M20 here in Singapore. Unlike the engined MC12, which was powered by a V12, and predates the MC20 by almost 20 years, the MC20 is paired with a shorter 3.0 twin-turbo V6. The in-house produced and developed Nettuno V6 engine produces 630hp and 730Nm, and features a very high compression ratio of 11:1. The V6 is paired with an 8-speed dual-clutch transmission.
The 90 degree V6 engine provides a broad band of torque, with the help of both port and direct fuel injection, and an innovative pre-chamber combustion system (derived from Formula 1), paired with twin-spark plugs for each cylinder.
Unlike the Enzo Ferrari-based MC12, Maserati has kept the styling of the MC20 tidy this round. For a little bit of flair, it has butterfly-type doors. Underneath its skin, the MC20 utilises a lightweight carbon fibre chassis, co-developed with Dallara. The weight/power ratio is an impressive 2.33kg/hp, and Maserati says that even with the MC20’s low weight, their new mid-engined supercar does not skimp on comfort and features. Owners will enjoy the comfort of its electrically-adjustable Sabelt sports seats, and premium audio by Sonus Faber. To compensate for the limited rear view, there is also a display embedded into the rear-view mirror (similar to how Land Rover does theirs).
To take care of the car’s handling, the front receives double wishbones, and the rear a multilink setup. Both are propped up with active dampers, supplied by Bilstein. Buyers can opt for the Vehicle Height Variator, to increase the ground clearance of the front axle by 50mm when the need to clear speed bumps and steep ramps arises.
Brembo Carbon Ceramic brakes offer superior speed shedding ability, and since they are built of aluminium, Maserati says that they are 50% lighter than traditional cast iron units.
There are 5 drive modes available, beginning with its default GT mode, which suits day-to-day driving; while at the flip end of this, CORSA Mode, with all systems are switched up to accommodate aggressive driving, where it also allows for more sideways action, owing to its nanny systems only stepping in when things get hairy. There is also a Wet mode to prevent slip and spins during wet days.
Nettuno V6 twin-turbocharged 3.0
The MC20 is priced at S$788,000 sans the COE, which puts it around the same neighbourhood of the Porsche 911, Aston Martin Vantage and Audi R8. There will also be a convertible bodystyle in the future, and an electric powertrain in the works.
