The Hethel based company is scheduled to reveal their first ever SUV on the 29th of March but new patents on the Lotus Type 132 electric SUV have surfaced which show the proposed exterior in a CAD format.

As part of Geely’s bold growth for Lotus to become a mainstream automaker, the Type 132 electric SUV will be one of two Chinese-built EV’s to be launched in the next 5 years after a £900 million investment was injected into an all-new manufacturing facility in Wuhan. Yes, that infamous Chinese industrial hub.

The Type 132 electric SUV has been in the works since 2016 and is set to launch with two and four wheel drive iterations which offer 447 kW and 560 kW. Lotus claims that in its hottest form it can get to 100 km/h in less than 3 seconds. It will offer 800V charging capabilities and will accommodate batteries ranging from 92-120kWh in capacity.

The latest patent renders give us an idea as to the future aesthetic of the brand which sees it moving away from the soft, curvaceous forms of the Elise and embraces a sharp design language akin to that of current-day Lamborghini.

This is evident by the wraparound rear light bar and split front headlights which follow sharp edges along the front and rear of the model. Aerodynamic advantage is hinted at with the sloped roofline, minimal wing mirrors and rear spoilers, all of which should improve range. The Type 132 electric SUV is also set to feature active aero with a shutting lower grille which is composed of hexagonal forms.

The Hethel based sportscar manufacturer expects the Type 132 electric SUV to steal market share from the Jaguar I-Pace, Audi E-tron Sportback and Ford Mustang Mach-E. Watch its welcoming video here.
