COVID-19 has directly disrupted just about every element of life. From family gathering to sporting events, the global pandemic is responsible for a year like no other. Goodwood’s famed Festival of Speed and glorious Revival events were amongst the casualties, but the special Speedweek event created a great omnibus consolation prize for enthusiasts. The new Lotus Evija even made its first dynamic debut.
While there were no crowds, many watched on TV as cars from all corners of the automotive world raced around the historical Goodwood circuit. One special four-wheeled guest was a Lotus Evija prototype that was seen running by the public for the first time. Finished in a scheme that harked back to Lotus’ legendary JPS F1 colours, the all-electric hyper car looked stunning.
COVID and other factors may have delayed the Lotus Evija, but it was clear from its performance at Goodwood that it’ll be worth the wait. This 1,973bhp EV also produces a Tarmac torturing 1,700Nm of torque, a combination that allows for 0-62mph in under three seconds. Top speed? 200mph.
Gavan Kershaw, Director of Vehicle Attributes, said: “Bringing the cars to an event like this is a welcome break from the hundreds of hours spent on proving grounds, where there’s a huge amount of open space and long straights to test the car’s performance limits. Goodwood is a fast and flowing circuit with numerous undulations in the surface, and so is a fantastic test and demonstration for the Evija as it’s the type of environment where many owners will use the car.”
The Evija was in good company with iconic Lotus Grand Prix machines such as the Lotus 25, 18, 49 and 79 stretching their legs, to name just a few. Lotus aims to be back at Goodwood next year in a more normal capacity – as do we all!
