In honour of the 50th anniversary of the inaugural Can-Am race series, a ground which McLaren first made its name as a motorsports powerhouse, the McLaren Special Operations (MSO) has released a commemorative 650S Can-Am edition, a limited-run special based on the 650S Spider.
Deliveries will commence in Spring next year, exactly fifty years after the first race of the Can-Am series, or Canadian-American Challenge Cup, flagged off at Mont Tremblant, Canada. Only 50 units of the 650S Can-Am have been earmarked for production.
Like the ‘regular’ 650S, the Can-Am edition is powered by McLaren’s award-winning 3.8-litre M838T powerplant rated with outputs of 641hp and 678Nm. Sitting amidships, the twin-turbocharged V8 fires the 650S from rest to 100kph in three seconds flat and maxes out at a heady 329kph.
The 650S’ make-up is underpinned by extensive usage of carbon fibre on its bodywork, construction of its lightweight MonoCell chassis, and even its retractable hard top.
To distinguish the Can-Am model from a ‘regular’ 650S, MSO has fitted the special edition model with a unique set of lightweight forged alloy wheels in gloss-black finish, carbon fibre-louvered front wings and quad stainless steel exhaust pipes.
The 650S Can-Am is offered in three bold colours – Mars Red, Papaya Spark, and Onyx Black. Each colour is additionally available with a corresponding racing livery to give an even closer visual association with the Can-Am series.
