What a weekend it was for Porsche, grabbing a win at the 24 Hours Le Mans and launching a new car in Kuala Lumpur. With a racing heritage that dates back prior to their first Le Mans endurance race win in 1970 (the 911-derived Porsche 935 won the 1979 Le Mans), it was befitting for Sime Darby Auto Performance (SDAP) to launch their most iconic model last weekend.
“The 911 is our tradition; it is also our future and will never stop evolving and improving. It has been the world’s best-selling sports car for decades and this new generation 911 has arrived to further extend this lead,” said Arnt Bayer, CEO of SDAP.
The new Porsche 911 is available in three variants – 911 Carrera, 911 Carrera S and 911 Carrera 4S; retail prices start from RM 870,000, RM 970,000 and RM 1,040,000 respectively. Prices exclude registration, road tax and insurance but come with a four-year warranty and free maintenance package.
The new Porsche 911 comes with a smaller 3-litre 6-cylinder flat engine replacing the 3.4-litre and 3.8-litre engines of the preceding 911 Carrera and Carrera S. But thanks to twin-turbocharging, the new engine gains 20 hp and 60 Nm over the outgoing ones while reducing fuel consumption by 12% (as well as road tax). Power output is now 370 hp, 450 Nm for the Carrera and 420 hp, 500 Nm for the Carrera S and Carrera 4S thanks to the turbochargers with modified compressors and improved exhaust system and engine management. This also improves the 0 – 100 km/h times – 4.2 seconds for Carrera, 3.9 seconds for Carrera S and 3.8 seconds for Carrera 4S. All times are based on the Malaysian versions equipped with PDK dual clutch transmission and Sport Chrono Package as standard.
With great power also comes great fuel consumption but the smaller displacement has increased efficiency and reduced average fuel consumption by about 1 litre / 100 km – Carrera : 7.4 l / 100 km, Carrera S : 7.7 l / 100 km, Carrera 4S : 7.9 l / 100 km.
For the money, you’ll get a revised lower and sportier front with larger air intakes, active cooling flaps and new headlights with four-point daytime running lights, new 3-D rear lights (Carrera 4S gets an additional dramatic tail light strip), vertical rear louvers, re-engineered Porsche Active Suspension Management, new Porsche Communication Management with 7″ multi-touch display, Apple CarPlay, online navigation and a steering-mounted driving mode switch derived from the 918 Spyder offering Normal, Sport, Sport Plus and Individual modes as well as a Sport Response button which provides maximum acceleration for 20 seconds.
Options available include Adaptive Cruise Control, a hydraulic front lift system which increases ground clearance by 40 mm to clear humps and bumps and active real-axle steering for the Carrera S and Carrera 4S which improves maneuverability and handling.
