NFTs – short for Non-Fungible Tokens – are the hottest new commodity on the internet, so it’s not surprising that carmakers too want to cash in on all that rage. The latest is Lamborghini, who has just unveiled its first-ever NFT piece, called Space Key.
At the centre of Lamborghini’s Space Key art piece is a piece of “advanced carbon fibre composite material” that was actually sent to space in 2019 as part of a joint research project. Once returned from its journey, the piece of carbon fibre was then sent back to Lamborghini, where they’ve then etched a unique QR code to the back that unlocks a piece of NFT digital artwork.
Only five examples of the Space Key will ever be available, with each QR code tied to a unique exclusive digital artwork, commissioned from a yet undisclosed artist.
“Innovation is a deeply rooted part of the Lamborghini DNA,” said Lamborghini Chairman and CEO, Stephan Winkelmann. “As a leading company for carbon fibre composite materials within the automotive sector, we pushed boundaries two and a half years ago with the joint research project in space. Now entering the metaverse is again proof of Lamborghini always setting sail for new horizons.
“The NFT world has been calling to us, and we are excited about engaging with this very passionate and innovative community.”
Lamborghini is working with NFT PRO to publish the Space Key NFT art piece. More info, including the name of the artist and auction, will be revealed in the following days and weeks.
