While car manufacturers in India are hiking the price of their cars, Hyundai Motor India has decided to swim against the tide by slashing the price of the Hyundai i20 premium hatchback in the country.
Diving into details, Hyundai Motor India has revised the price of the Sportz variant of the i20 hatchback. Thanks to the updated price, the Hyundai i20 Sportz variant is now cheaper by Rs 3,500.
As a result, prices for the Hyundai i20 Sportz variant now starts from Rs 8.05 lakh (ex-showroom, India) for the manual transmission model, whereas the dual-tone model based on the same variant now costs Rs 8.20 lakh (ex-showroom, India).
In addition to that, the Hyundai i20 Sportz trim level can also be specified with an iVT transmission system and this variant post the price revision is priced at Rs 9.07 lakh (ex-showroom, India). This makes it a very attractive proposition for many urbanites.
It is also worth mentioning that the Hyundai i20 continues to be a very good seller for the South Korean automaker despite stiff competition from sub-4m SUVs. As such, one might wonder about the reason for the sudden price cut on the premium hatchback and there is a catch.
Behind the attractive new price tag, Hyundai Motor India has replaced the automatic climate control system with a more conventional manual AC unit with a heater. While this may not be a deal breaker for many, the absence of climate control on a premium hatchback might turn off few customers.
The Hyundai i20 Sports trim level can be specified with two engine options. The 1.2-litre, naturally-aspirated engine puts out 81.8bhp of power and 114.7Nm of peak torque. However, power output jumps to 86.8bhp when this engine is specified to an iVT gearbox.
On the other hand, the 1.0-litre, turbocharged petrol engine is a lot more suited for enthusiasts and it puts out 118.4bhp of peak power and 172Nm of peak torque. However, unlike the naturally-aspirated powertrain, this engine comes exclusively mated to a 7-speed DCT gearbox.
Thoughts About The Hyundai i20 Sportz Variant Price Cut
We think that the newly revised price may not be significant enough to affect buying decision. While the absence of auto climate control on a premium hatchback may not be a deal breaker for many, we think it’s a shame not to have such a feature on a premium hatchback.
