The Hyundai i20 was one of the first premium hatchbacks to be launched in the country and has been one of the most popular models ever since then. The supremacy of the Hyundai i20 was directly challenged by the introduction of the Maruti Baleno and the two cars continue to face stiff competition from each other even today. If you are also in the market to buy one of these premium hatchbacks, here is a detailed Hyundai i20 vs Maruti Baleno comparison that will help you understand the two products better.
Hyundai i20 Vs Maruti Baleno Price And Variants
The Maruti Baleno is one of the cheapest premium hatchbacks in India in 2023 and is priced from ₹6.61 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). The Hyundai i20 on the other hand is significantly expensive and is priced from ₹7.45 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi).

Hyundai i20 Vs Maruti Baleno – Engine, Gearbox, and Performance
The buyers of the Maruti Baleno get to choose from two powertrain options – 1.2L K12C Dual jet petrol and 1.2L K12 CNG. While the 1.2L K12C engine delivers a maximum power output of 88.5 bhp and 113 Nm of peak torque output, the CNG powertrain churns out 76.4 bhp and 98.5 Nm. The petrol engine is offered with either a 5-speed manual or an AMT gearbox.
The Hyundai i20 is also offered with two engine options: 1.2L Kappa petrol and 1.0L TGDi turbo petrol. As far as power output is concerned, the 1.2L Kappa petrol engine is capable of producing up to 86.7 bhp and 114.7 Nm of maximum torque while the turbo engine delivers 118 bhp and 172 Nm of peak torque. Three different gearbox options are available for the buyers depending on the engine they go for—5-speed manual, IVT, and 7-speed DCT.
Moving on to the dynamics front, it is the Hyundai i20 that offers a more balanced setup for the buyers. The ride quality is not only better but the suspension also absorbs most of the bumpers and bad roads without breaking a sweat. The steering wheel also feels better and is more responsive when compared to the Baleno. The hardcore enthusiasts may opt for the N-Line versions of the i20 which get a stiffer suspension and tweaked steering to improve the dynamics and driving experience. The Baleno on the other hand may not be as good as the i20 but offers a decent suspension setup and driving experience. If I were to pick any one of the two, the Hyundai i20 definitely would be my choice.

Design And Dimensions
While both cars have a similar footprint, it is the Hyundai i20 that looks sportier with its sharp and aggressive styling. The sleek LED lights along with a muscular grille not only give it a better stance but complement the character of the car. The side profile too falls in line with the overall styling while the rear is too busy for my liking. The build quality levels are better than the Baleno and you will not find any major issues with fit-finish levels and panel gaps.
The new Baleno however continues to feature a more subtle design language and gets a revised front fascia which is largely dominated by new LED lights and a bold front grille. The Baleno however now looks better from the rear, but it is a purely subjective matter. Picking one of the two cars just on the basis of the exterior styling is hard as both the cars come with a different approach and are equally appreciated by the buyers in the segment.

Our Verdict
The Maruti Suzuki Baleno as well as the Hyundai i20 are currently one of the best offerings in the premium hatchback segment in India and attract a fair number of buyers every month. While the Hyundai i20 outshines most of the rivals in terms of refinement and looks, the Baleno on the other hand is known to offer better long-term reliability and a practical package. The powertrain options of the i20 deliver better refinement levels and the turbo petrol engine delivers a stronger performance. While picking one of the two cars is completely dependent on individual requirements, it is the Hyundai i20 that has an edge over the Baleno with its premium, comfortable, and sorted package.
