A reliable vehicle can run for tens of thousands of miles without major issues. Is the fully electric Porsche Taycan one of them? Porsche has been an industry leader for decades, but it’s new to EV manufacturing. So, how reliable is the Porsche Taycan? Consumer Reports weighs in.
An overview of the 2022 Porsche Taycan

If there’s one thing Porsche has nailed down, it’s blending luxury and performance in one vehicle. For years, the German automaker has developed a reputation for masterfully integrating those qualities to create uncompromising cars, and the Taycan is yet another example.
The 2022 Porsche Taycan gets its power from two electric motors that can provide up to 522 hp with launch control enabled. Even without that feature, the turbo model can harness 616 hp. The Taycan also comes with a standard two-speed transmission that ensures smoother power delivery.
Other standard features include all-wheel drive, regenerative braking, and adaptive air suspension. Thanks to its battery pack, the Taycan can quickly go from 0 to 60 mph in under three seconds.
The Taycan also has a dash-mounted chronograph, passenger touchscreen, night vision, massaging front seats, heated and ventilated front seats, four-zone automatic climate control, and a 21-speaker Burmester premium audio system. In addition, the Taycan boasts ambient lighting, high-quality materials, upscale trim designs, and Android Auto and Apple CarPlay integration.
But you’ll pay for all of that opulence and performance. The 2022 Porsche Taycan starts at $82,700. And a fully loaded Taycan runs $185,000 for the Turbo S and $187,600 for the Cross Turismo.

The Taycan is Porsche’s first series-production EV, so it makes sense the car would have some reliability issues. Consumer Reports gives the 2022 model a low predicted reliability rating of 2 out of 5 due to the brand’s short history in the EV category.
According to CR, “We expect the 2022 Taycan to be less reliable than other new cars. This prediction is based on Porsche’s brand history and the electric cars category.”
In addition, the 2021 model already has eight safety recalls. They include problems with the suspension, brakes, hazard lights, and seat belts. And the 2020 Porsche Taycan — the first model year for the EV — has five recalls involving similar issues.
But the Taycan performed well in other categories, including predicted owner satisfaction, where it scored a 4 out of 5. It also earned a perfect 5 for acceleration and the same score for its transmission.
However, CR notes it lacks sufficient data to make a reliability prediction because the car is too new to the market.
Are EVs more reliable than gas-powered vehicles?

The EV market is slowly growing as more automakers offer electric vehicles. According to Forbes Wheels, though most EV owners report great satisfaction, they have issues with reliability. Still, the site reports that EVs should be more reliable than gas-powered cars because electric vehicles have fewer moving parts and, thus, reduced complexity.
But that hasn’t come to fruition yet because automakers are still finding ways to navigate EV production and don’t have hundreds of years of experience making EVs, unlike gas-powered vehicles.
However, consumers are gravitating more toward electric vehicles due to their expected lower operating costs than gas cars. An EV doesn’t require much maintenance, either. Their brakes also last longer due to regenerative braking, and EVs don’t need oil changes, meaning they have low fuel costs. In fact, an EV’s maintenance costs are 10% to 15% less than those for gas-combustion vehicles.
