While everyone is busy being up in arms over the prospect of the Ferrari Purosangue—the high-riding 2+2 sports vehicle Ferrari refuses to call an SUV—rival Lamborghini apparently has no problem padding out its tiny lineup with more SUV models. The current Lamborghini Urus SUV will get a sequel, but this time it’ll be fully electric. That won’t be Lambo’s first EV, though. Instead, a second, all-new 2+2 SUV will be introduced to launch the brand’s electric revolution.
Autocar reports the “first fully electric Lamborghini will be an all-new, radically styled 2+2 crossover arriving in 2028, adding a fourth model line to the Italian brand’s range, and it will be swiftly followed by an electric-only second-generation Urus SUV, CEO Stephan Winkelmann has revealed to Autocar.” The executive declined to offer any more details in a Q&A with the outlet, but did go into detail about why Lamborghini has chosen this path for its future.
The essential problem for Lamborghini in this moment is regulations, both present and projected rules the automaker is worried it’ll have to comply with. The issue now is that there is little global unity among current regulatory goals and directives—it’s not clear quite yet what direction Lamborghini may be forced into—so Winkelmann has decided to sit on combustion-powered cars as long as possible. To make that viable, introducing two bestselling all-electric models will keep Lamborghini’s fleet average emissions down, making “room” for hybrid gas-powered sports cars to still be sold, at least in markets where they haven’t been outright banned.
“Let’s say that we will welcome harmonization of global plans. There are so many markets with so many different plans that we must take all the time we have to consider the best route forward. It’s not simple,” the executive told Autocar. “Of course, we must make decisions well ahead of any deadlines, and it might be that we can’t wait for the regulations to commit, but this strategy with the two fully electric cars is a decision that gives us more time to consider.”
Autocar speculates the first full EV, the new 2+2 SUV, will take a crossover approach in its design and could be inspired by the infamous Lamborghini Estoque sedan concept car from over a decade ago that was never greenlit for production. However, they also speculate it’s possible the vehicle ends up with only two doors, since there will be the four-door second-gen Urus SUV EV available eventually, as well. Both EVs are anticipated to go on sale by 2030. In the meantime, all three current Lamborghini models will go plug-in hybrid by 2024, starting with the all-new Aventador successor set to debut later this year, followed by the Huracan and Urus.
