Aston Martin is famed for producing some of the most beautiful cars in the world, but also for its troubled financial past. Bankruptcy has haunted the marque throughout its history, and it’s only recently that it was spared from the same fate by an investor group headed by Lawrence Stroll. A lot is riding on the new DBX SUV of which the first example has just been completed.
Just like the Aston Martin DB7 did in the past, the hope is that the DBX will bring higher volume sales and financial stability to the British company. This is Aston’s first ever SUV, but it joins just about every other premium manufacturer already creating high-riding vehicles. Porsche famously bankrolls its more exciting models via the sales of its Cayenne and Macan models.
The DBX has undergone five years of development to ensure that this SUV is a true Aston Martin. With over 2,000 preorders for the car, ‘Job 1’ is the first of many. The sporting SUV will be powered by AMG’s twin-turbocharged 4.0-litre V8 engine with an output of 543bhp and 516lb ft. These figures make it more potent than an Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifoglio, although 0-62mph acceleration is slower at 4.5 seconds.
Marek Reichman, Aston Martin Executive Vice President and Chief Creative Officer, said: ““We are incredibly proud of our first SUV, which is as much of an Aston Martin as any one of our sports cars. From my design team to the engineers, the vehicle dynamics team and all the experts who hand-craft this beautiful car, here at St Athan, the DBX has become the car that will drive Aston Martin into a bold new era.”
We can’t wait to get our hands on this handsome SUV. Customers will start receiving their new Aston Martins later this month.
