According to the latest data from South Korea-based market research firm SNE Research, global installations of EV batteries (EVs, PHEVs, and HEVs) reached 469.2 GWh in the January–May 2026 period, up 16.3% year-on-year. In May alone, global installations reached 116.5 GWh, up 24.6% year-on-year and 7.8% month-on-month, extending the upward trend seen since the start of the year. Global EV battery installment trend from 2017 to May 2026 By region, recovering demand across Europe, Asia-Pacific and Latin America, alongside rising EV penetration in emerging markets, continued to support global battery demand growth. Chinese manufacturers maintained a dominant position in the global battery supply chain during the period. Seven of the world’s top ten battery suppliers were Chinese companies, with a combined installed volume of 340.4 GWh, up 19.7% year-on-year and accounting for 72.5% of the global market. CATL and BYD remained the top two global suppliers. Combined, they recorded 256 GWh of installations, representing 54.6% of global market share. CATL retained its global lead, with battery installations reaching 188.4 GWh in the first five months of the year, up 22.9% year-on-year. Its market share rose to 40.2%, up 2.2 percentage points from a year earlier. BYD ranked second with 67.6 GWh of installations, holding a 14.4% global market share, slightly lower than a year earlier. Gloval top 10 battery suppliers by installations in Jan-May from 2025 to 2026 SNE Research noted that BYD’s fluctuations in battery installations are largely driven by its vertically integrated model, as its battery demand closely tracks its own EV production and sales cycle. BYD sold 1.8085 million vehicles in the first half of the year, down 15.72% year-on-year. Overseas sales reached 789,400 units, up 70%, accounting for more than 43% of total sales. As Blade Battery technology and ultra-fast charging systems expand into more overseas markets, BYD’s battery installations are expected to have further growth potential. Other Chinese battery makers also recorded strong growth. CALB ranked fourth globally with 23.8 GWh of installations, up 39.3% year-on-year. Top 6 battery suppliers from 2017 to May 2026 Gotion High-tech followed closely, recording 21.7 GWh in the first four months, up 37% year-on-year, making it the fastest-growing company among the global top ten. EVE Energy, SVOLT Energy Technology and Sunwoda ranked 7th, 9th and 10th with 15.4 GWh, 12.1 GWh and 11.4 GWh respectively, posting growth of 35.2%, 35.3% and 13.8%. In contrast, Japanese and South Korean manufacturers saw slower growth. LG Energy Solution remained third globally with 41 GWh, up 7.3% year-on-year. SK On and Panasonic were the only two top-ten players to record declines, down 5.8% and 8.5% respectively.
