BYD CEO Wang Chuanfu is increasingly focusing on foreign marketsBYD’s sales rose by 5.5 per cent year-on-year in June and by 5.2 per cent compared to May. The published figures represent wholesale sales and include vehicles for both the Chinese domestic market and export markets. While international business continues to expand rapidly, the manufacturer faces ongoing pressure in its home market. In China, BYD sold 228,123 ‘new energy vehicles’ in June, marking a 22 per cent year-on-year decline. Meanwhile, overseas sales reached a new record of 175,349 vehicles, an increase of nearly 95 per cent compared to June 2025. For the second consecutive month, over 40 per cent of total NEV sales were attributed to international markets – specifically, 43 per cent in June. It has become increasingly clear in recent months that exports could emerge as the company’s primary growth driver. The powertrain mix also reveals divergent trends. Sales of BEVs fell by 2.6 per cent year-on-year to 201,472 units. In contrast, plug-in hybrid EVs saw a 14.7 per cent increase, reaching 195,820 vehicles, which offset the decline in BEV sales. The commercial vehicle segment also performed strongly. BYD sold 6,180 electrified commercial vehicles in June, achieving a 24.7 per cent increase year-on-year.During Q2, BYD sold a total of 1.108 million NEVs. While this represents a 3.2 per cent decline compared to the same quarter last year, sales surged by over 58 per cent compared to the often weaker first quarter in China. Overseas sales rose by nearly 47 per cent quarter-on-quarter to 471,091 vehicles. For the first half of the year, total sales amounted to 1.81 million vehicles, remaining 15.7 per cent below the previous year’s figure. While domestic sales in China declined by almost 40 per cent year-to-date, international sales jumped by over 70 per cent to 792,256 vehicles. As a result, nearly 44 per cent of global sales in the first half of the year were attributed to overseas business.According to CnEVPost, this recovery may be linked to a gradual transition in production. BYD is currently rolling out the second generation of its Blade Battery. The restructuring had recently caused bottlenecks and longer delivery times for several high-volume models. Simultaneously, the manufacturer continues to expand its premium segment portfolio and launched its first D-segment SUV of the Dynasty series, the Da Tang, in mid-June.cnevpost.com
