As Carscoops detailed, BYD is looking to sharply reduce that concern in the U.K. with new flash-charging stations that can bring a compatible battery from 10% to 97% in about nine minutes.Here's what to knowThe first model in the U.K. expected to support BYD's full 1,500-kilowatt charging capability is the Denza Z9 GT, the auto brand announced in a news release. BYD plans to install 300 Flash Charging stations across the U.K., concentrating on BYD and Denza dealerships, motorway service stations, and existing charging hubs.AdvertisementAdvertisementEach Flash Charging unit is equipped with two plugs, per the release. BYD says the charger can reach 1,500 kW when only one vehicle is connected, while two cars charging at once can each receive up to 1,000 kW.In extreme cold, minus 22 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 30 degrees Celsius), the automaker says charging from 20% to 97% takes 12 minutes. Under its standard claims, a compatible battery can move from 10% to 70% in five minutes and from 10% to 97% in nine minutes.For comparison, those speeds are well beyond what many drivers in the U.K. typically see. Carscoops reported that Tesla's U.K. V2 Superchargers run at 150 kW, while V3 and V4 equipment tops out at 250 kW. Each Flash Charging station includes two 185-kilowatt-hour storage batteries, which are recharged from the grid at up to 560 kW before that energy is delivered to the vehicle.What's being done?Alongside the network buildout, BYD said in the release that owners of compatible vehicles will get preferential electricity pricing "that will be considerably lower than prevailing ultra-rapid charging retail prices" in the U.K. The automaker added that drivers of other brands will also be able to use the stations at higher rates, though ones that are "competitive," per the release.
