Keen Porsche fans are putting in orders for the next-generation all-electric Macan – and it hasn’t even been revealed yet.
Porsche announced back in 2019 that the second-generation Macan will be an EV, and the German company has been busy testing prototypes ahead of its reveal.
But even without seeing it, eager customers have already been registering their interest at dealerships.
“We have been pleased that, like we often see with things like the 911 where people come into the Porsche Centres and inquire about the product even before it has had its world premiere and been unveiled and confirmed, we have got that happening with Macan,” said Porsche Cars Australia head of public relations, Chris Jordan.
“People are already coming into Porsche Centres for Macan saying ‘I have seen the buzz online about the Macan EV, I know you can’t tell me much more about it but I want you to keep me informed when it’s announced – here are my details’.
“It happens with 911s – they put their order in a year or two before the car is unveiled, so Porsche Centres are used to handling those sorts of inquiries. But it’s nice that it has already started.”
Timing for a reveal of the hotly anticipated electric SUV is yet to be announced, but it is believed that it won’t make its debut this year. A 2023 reveal is more likely, with a possible Australian launch set for 2024.
The current Macan was updated again late last year.
The current Macan was updated late last year with fresh interior tech and more. This followed the 2019 mid-life facelift that ushered in styling tweaks over the original that launched in early 2014.
The current-generation internal combustion Macan is expected to sell alongside the new EV version, although given the expected launch timing, it may not be for a long period.
Underpinning the next Macan will be the Volkswagen Group PPE electric platform that will also be used for the recently revealed Audi A6 Avant e-tron.
It is expected to get an even sleeker coupe-like exterior design, while the cabin will have even more digital tech than it already does.
The electrification of the Macan will also open it up to even more rivals beyond the Audi Q5, BMW X3, Mercedes-Benz GLC, Volvo XC60, Range Rover Evoque, Lexus NX and Genesis GV70 that it currently faces off against.
The Tesla Model Y, BMW iX3, Audi e-tron and Mercedes-Benz EQC will be in its crosshairs, as well as the incoming Genesis GV60 and the Lexus RZ.
The Macan remains Porsche’s best-selling model in Australia by some margin, with 2328 finding homes in 2021 – a 7.9 increase on its 2020 haul.
