Ferrari purists might want to look away from this build.
Many car builders will often prefer to transplant a Ferrari engine into a non-Ferrari car, with glorious results. One example of this is a WRX STI with a V8 from Maranello. There's also that time when a guy managed to shove an electrified Ferrari V6 into a tiny Australian sedan.
However, Mike Burroughs from the StanceWorks might make the Italian carmaker's fans cringe with his build. That's because he did it the other way around, building a Honda K24-swapped Ferrari 308 GTB from the '70s – the predecessor of the Ferrari F8 Tributo. Yes, he ditched the car's original V8 engine for a screamin' VTEC four-banger.
This build isn't exactly “new.” The owner/builder says that it has been in the making for two and a half years. And for that long, he hasn't actually driven it on the roads just yet.
The video above addresses that, with the owner finally taking the wild build on a proper ride. But that's after plenty of finishing touches like a Lexan windshield, a fire suppression system, new seat mounts, suspension fine-tuning, bump stops, and many other crucial bits.
The engine itself has been completed in an older video (see below) where it managed to reach the build's goal of 1,000 horsepower, making it as powerful as a Mercedes-AMG One. Handling-wise, that remains to be seen.
Regardless, that's a good chunk more than the stock K24's 205 hp. On paper, it even blows the Ferrari's original 202-hp 2.9-liter F106 V8 out of the water. How did the owner achieve this?
Well, just like that tiny but epic Honda Del Sol from HunterTuned, with a big turbo and a proper tune. It's amazing how far these small Honda engines can go in the right hands.
So how did the test drive go? In a nutshell, Mike didn't give it the full beans. In the test drive video, he took it on a well-populated public road so he had to be careful. Plus, he says he wants to stay in the good graces of a nearby Police Station.
He did promise, however, that a follow-up video is coming where he'll be taking it on the track. This will let the Honda-powered Italian stallion stretch its muscles. So, either watch out for that or if you're a Ferrari purist, make sure your thoughts are heard in the comments section below.
