LONDON: Most fans agree that the first Mini which came out 60 years ago was the best, and now that evergreen runabout is available again, but this time with an electric motor and a raft of tech on board.
The zero-emission edition is essentially a pimped-out original based on a restored classic, with as much as possible upgraded to cope with modern motoring.
“This is the first time an electrified classic Mini has entered production,” says Raphael Caille of makers Swindon Powertrains. “The classic Mini has such a special place in people’s hearts, not only in the UK but around the world.”
The Swind mini retains the go-kart handling of the original, designed in 1959 by Sir Alex Issigonis. It also has punchy performance to match. It was unveiled at the recent London Classic Car Show in Swindon, south-west of London.
The reborn Mini has an 80-kw motor on board which produces the equivalent of 110hp. Lithium batteries contain 24 kw of energy and can be fully charged in four hours. Top speed is 130 km/h.
Standard features include USB charging ports, infotainment and navigation systems along with power steering and underfloor heating.
Prices start at £79,000 (RM419,000), well over the price of a not-so-green original, and the car can be ordered in either left- or right-hand-drive in bespoke colours. Swind is building just 100 examples.
