The Chevrolet Spark is being recalled due to an issue that was supposedly fixed in 2014 when it was originally recalled: the cars’ hood latches are corroding, which could cause the latch to not engage properly and therefore potentially open unexpectedly.
This second recall covers 120,688 examples of the Chevrolet Spark, and includes model years 2013 to 2015, in both gasoline and EV trims, regardless of whether the previous recall was performed or not. GM says the previous recall — eight years ago — did not properly fix the issue of preventing corrosion of the latch components in the hood, but the new replacement parts have been prepared with better anti-corrosion coating. GM also noted that this new replacement should not cause the latch to corrode prematurely, as the original and previous replacement parts might.
U.S. owners of affected vehicles will be notified by mail beginning in October, with a second letter to be sent out once a full remedy has become available. Owners can take their vehicle to the dealer for an inspection, where damaged components or the entire striker assembly, if necessary, will be replaced, free of charge.
Transport Canada currently has no information about a potential recall for Canadian owners, and there are no previous Canadian recalls for the 2013 through 2015 Chevrolet Spark regarding this hood latch issue.
