Chevy gave its best-selling Silverado full-size truck a pretty significant makeover for the 2022 model year. It wasn’t a complete redesign from the ground up. But the Silverado’s 2022 refresh brought it vastly improved cabin quality, a new off-road-focused ZR2 trim, and a 20% torque boost from the smallest engine in the lineup.
That upgraded turbocharged 2.7-liter 4-cylinder impressed Chevy engineers enough for them to shuffle the engine choices available to buyers. Gone is the base 4.3-liter V6 in favor of the more muscular I4.
In fact, the engine’s so good, GMAuthority reports that the 2022 Silverado LT Trail Boss will now come equipped with it rather than the 5.3-liter V8 found on the 2021 edition. As of this writing, the Chevy configurator site still lists the 2022 Silverado LT Trail Boss’ standard engine as the 5.3-liter V8, while the Custom Trail Boss lists the 2.7-liter 4-cylinder.
While the 2.7 makes 45 less horsepower than the V8 (310 vs. 355), changes in output give it more robust torque (420 vs 383 lb-ft). That extra muscle comes in handy when towing.
The 2.7-liter engine has an EPA rating of up to 19 mpg in the city and 22 on the highway, while the V8 gets 16/21 under the best of circumstances. So this seems to be a win-win for shoppers – more torque and better mileage.
We’ve reached out to Chevrolet to find out how the price might change.
Chevrolet will reportedly also give buyers the option of a 3.0-liter turbodiesel Duramax engine on the Custom Trail Boss trim.
The 2022 Silverado isn’t expected on dealership lots until spring.
