The Chery Tiggo 9 SUV was unveiled in China. It is a large and good-looking car. The enormous grille gives it a lot of presence. The Tiggo 9 is the largest Chery-branded SUV so far. They have come a long way since the very first Chery Tiggo SUV.
China’s Chery Automobile is an automotive manufacturing company headquartered in Wuhu, Anhui Province, China. Founded in 1997, the company has grown significantly in the past two decades, establishing itself as one of the leading automakers in China and expanding its reach globally. Today, the Tiggo name is used for a series of crossovers and SUVs. The lineup is expanding fast and currently counts 14 cars with lots of overlap in price and size.
The Chery Tiggo 9 has two-tone paint with black pillars and a black roof. It has pop-out door handles, 20-inch wheels, and an ornament that stretches from the front fender to the front door. It is a good-looking car for its size, and probably the best-looking Tiggo of the moment.
Chery will offer a five-seat and a seven-seat version of the Tiggo 9. The car in the photos is the five-seat version. The seven-seat version has a 2/2/3 seat layout. The Tiggo 9 is a large SUV. Size is 4820/1930/1699, with a 2820-millimeter wheelbase.
The Chery Tiggo 9 will be positioned above the Chery Tiggo 8, making it the new flagship of the Tiggo range. Chery makes three model variants of the Tiggo 8: the Tiggo 8, the Tiggo 8 Pro, and the Tiggo 8 Plus. Their wheelbases are all the same but the length differs a little. The largest of the lot is the Tiggo 8 Pro, sized 4745/1860/1745, with a 2710-millimeter wheelbase. So the Tiggo 9 is a significantly larger vehicle.
The centerpiece of the dashboard is a dual-curved screen with a 12.3-inch LCD instrument panel and a 12.3-inch central control screen. The screen is curved towards the driver. That is a rarity in China where the passenger has either equal access to the central screen or a third screen of his/her own. None of that in the Tiggo 9. An interesting choice for what is supposed to be a family SUV. The cabin’s digital functionalities are powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8155 chip.
The gear selector is mounted on the steering wheel column. We see that a lot in China recently, on both ICE and NEV cars. The start button is almost Bentley-like, and so are the air vents with their cool metal look.
The infotainment system is pre-loaded with popular Chinese apps, and customers can download other apps from Chery’s own app store.
The center tunnel looks super classy with a wireless charging pad for two smartphones, a drive mode selector, and the stereo’s volume control. Below the tunnel are a large storage space, USB B- and C ports, and a 220v socket. The Tiggo 9 is furthermore equipped with a 14-speaker Sony surround sound system and a 255-color ambient light system.
Chinese people like their smartphones large, so the wireless pad is extra large too.
This is the five-seat version so there is a lot of space in the back.
The Tiggo 9 is powered by a new 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine with an output of 261 hp and 400 Nm. The engine is mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission with flappy paddles, sending horses to all four wheels. The top speed is 205 km/h. Combined fuel consumption is 7.7L per 100 kilometers. Later on, Chery will also offer a 2.0 turbo PHEV version of the Tiggo 9. Chery hasn’t disclosed the combined output of the PHEV yet, but they have said the PHEV will do 0-100 in 4.5 seconds and have a CLTC range of 1300 kilometers.

The Chery Tiggo 9 will have its public debut at the 2023 Shanghai Auto Show next month and its launch on the Chinese car market is scheduled for May. Chery says the price will start around 160,000 yuan ($23,060), which is 10,000 yuan less than we heard earlier. That seems to be a very good deal for such a large car with classy looks and 261 hp.
