It's the battle of the up-and-coming brands Chery and Haval versus the well-established Volkswagen marque as we compare the Tiggo 8 Pro, the Tiguan and the H6. Which one is our winner?
Chery has made a resounding comeback within the local market, with three solid products in the form of the Tiggo 4 Pro, the Tiggo 7 Pro and the Tiggo 8 Pro, along with a large dealer network. Two key rivals are the Volkswagen Tiguan and the Haval H6, but which one would we choose?
Chery Tiggo 8 Pro
Powertrain and performance
Powering the Tiggo 8 Pro is a 1.6-litre turbocharged petrol engine with outputs of 145Kw and 290Nm that is sent through the front wheels via a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic. Fuel consumption is claimed at 7.0 L/100km and the 0-100km/h time is claimed at 8.9 seconds.
Standard equipment
The Tiggo 8 Pro comes with LED headlights, a six-way electrically adjustable seat for the driver, ambient interior lighting, a wireless smartphone charger, a 12.3 infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto functionality, an 8.0-inch colour touchscreen for climate control, digitised instrument cluster, climate control, adaptive cruise control, 6 Airbags, keyless entry and start, blind spot monitor, front collision warning, lane change/evasion assist, steering and lane assist and a reverse camera.
Safety
The Chery Tiggo 8 Pro received a 5-star safety rating from C-NCAP (Chinese New Car Assessment Programme).
Practicality
The Tiggo 8 Pro boasts a 892-litre boot and seating for seven occupants but is the smallest product in this comparison.
Price and value proposition
At R574 900 the Tiggo 8 Pro, in Executive specification, offers fantastic value for money.

Volkswagen Tiguan 1.4TSI 110kW
Powertrain and performance
Powering the Tiguan is a 1.4-litre turbocharged petrol engine that produces 110Kw and 250Nm that is sent through the front wheels via a 6-speed automatic gearbox. Fuel consumption is claimed at 7.7 L/100km while the claimed 0-100km/h time is 9.2 seconds.
Standard equipment
The base model Tiguan comes with 17-inch alloy wheels, 6 airbags, climate control, a multifunction steering wheel, a touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, cloth seats and cruise control.
Safety
The Tiguan was crash tested by Euro NCAP in 2016 where it achieved a 5-Star rating.
Practicality
Volkswagen claims 520-litres of boot space in the Tiguan and 191mm of ground clearance, making it a very practical product.
Price and value proposition
At R589 000 for the base model Tiguan, it appears expensive in this company.
Haval H6
Powertrain and performance
Powering the H6 is a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine that produces 150kW and 320Nm that is sent through all four wheels via a 7-speed automatic gearbox. Fuel consumption is claimed at 7.0 L/100km while the claimed 0-100km/h time is 8.9 seconds.
Standard equipment
The H6, in Super Luxury guise, comes with Traffic Sign Recognition (TSR), Lane-Keeping Assist, Adaptive Cruise Control, a colour touchscreen infotainment system with Apple Car Play and Android Auto, a wireless smartphone charger, a head-up display, 19-inch alloy wheels, 6 airbags, keyless entry/start, a panoramic roof, electrically adjustable and heated front seats and front and rear PDC with a surround-view camera.
Safety
The was crash tested by ANCAP in 2022 where it achieved a 5-Star rating.
Practicality
The Haval features a 600-litre boot and 170mm of ground clearance, making it reasonably practical.
Price and value proposition
At R589 950 the Haval offers an incredible amount of value as a package.

Verdict
Having looked at the figures, both the Chery and the Haval are incredible value-for-money propositions, but if it were our money, the Chery would get our vote thanks to its marginally larger dimensions, slightly lower price and more frugal powertrain.
